2009 River Season Cancelled due to on going negotiations to access the Animas River through private lands in the Bakers Bridge area. The county has approved two rafts a day twice a day with a maximum of 13 people per trip. The river access point at Trimble Lane is public. If anyone has information of a land owner near Bakers Bridge that would like to work with my fully licensed and insured raft company please contact me at 970 903 9428.
Durango River Trips of Colorado specializes in small, personalized raft trips in the incredibly scenic Animas river valley 12 miles north of Durango, CO. We are the only river company with access to this stretch of river. This means you can relax and enjoy a peaceful float that communes with the river rather than challenges it. That's right, this is a
Class II float, not a whitewater experience.
The Durango River Trips difference.
(1) You will not be rafting with the masses with dozen upon dozens of rafts
and hundreds of people.
(2)Your family and friends will not be crammed into a raft with strangers.
(3)Your river trip will not be a McRafting experience that has more similarities with Disney World than what you expect from Colorado.
(4)Simply put, you, your family, your friends, whoever you want, will have your own professionally guided raft of which there will never be more than 2 rafts on a trip.
My goal is to conduct trips that emphasize the beauty of the surroundings with a focus on wildlife, natural history, geology, local history and good conversation while floating down the "river of lost souls," the Animas. I have been guiding trips since 1995 from coast to coast and have made Durango my home since 1998. I believe this type of a trip will be enjoyed by people who want a more intimate and relaxed journey with their family and friends.
Mike,
I just have to tell you that we had a WONDERFUL
experience on the river
last monday. James was our guide and he is a real
asset to your
group. He is very knowledgeable, enjoyable, and knows
how to read people as
well as water. This was our first taste of rafting
and even my "chicken
sister" agreed
that she had a blast and would do it again. Thanks
again for a great
time.

El Rio de las Animas Perdidas
You have probably come to Durango to get away from the crowds, to enjoy the fantastic scenery, perfect climate, and unparalleled beauty of the San Juan Mountains. Mesa Verde, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad and Durango Mountain Resort (we still call it Purgatory) attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
With nearly a
dozen raft companies running the same stretch of river I had become disillusioned with that style of McRafting. These are good companies run by good people, I know, I have worked for most of them, but I thought a different kind of trip might have some appeal to others like me.
Durango River Trips will never put more than two boats per trip on the river. That builds in a limit of a maximum 13 adults. These are large 16 foot rafts designed to hold ten people each, 7 adults will be the maximum giving everyone lots of room. Being the only licensed outfitter on this stretch of the Animas guarantees a very special trip!
Sincerely,
James Wilkes
