I have heard from a number of people that there is no one place to go to on line to figure out what to do around Durango, CO. Well, here is a starting point for you.
1. Mesa Verde National Park or Chaco Canyon National Historical Park or Chimney Rock Archaeological Area
2. Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
3. Bicycle or walk the Animas River Trail through town
4. Durango Community Recreation Center on the Animas River Trail
5. Hike just minutes from town, favorites are Animas Mountain (Trail Head at the end of West 33rd) and the Colorado Trail (TH 15 minute drive up West 25th)
6. Mountain Bike Horse Gulch, Phils World or the Alien Loop
7. Durango Discovery Museum on the Animas River Trail
8. Durango Fish Hatchery on the Animas River Trail
9. Silverton 50 miles north of Durango, Mayflower Mill, Old 100 gold mine tour
10. Four wheeling the San Juans Alpine loop Animas Forks Ghost Town
11. Drive the Million Dollar Highway
The abc's of Durango
Here is a little gift from me to you. We all know the obvious ways to spend time around Durango: the train, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Purgatory, the Community Recreation Center. This is how the locals spend their day off. It is a very active day of swimming, a little bit of hiking, and water fall and/or bridge jumping.
A is for Adrenaline Falls on Lime Creek just past Durango Mountain Resort. Some people fish here, some swim here. It is hard to find, but really beautiful. The other attraction is that you can jump up to 60 feet high (or much less) off the cliff wall next to the falls
B is for Bakers Bridge. A beautiful swimming and sunning/picnic spot on the Animas River with an optional bridge jump about 40 feet high. River side rocks provide jumps of any hight for the fear impaired.
C is for Cascade Creek. It is about 400 yards long in a beautiful slot canyon which is travelled by walking through the creek and jumping a series of falls that ends with the tallest at about 12 feet high. Laps can easily be done. Water is always cold. |
